Second congressman files to be next state attorney general

(The Center Square) – U.S. Rep. Jeff Jackson made his candidacy for North Carolina attorney general official on Wednesday.

The Charlotte Democrat is in a three-candidate primary with just two days to go in the filing period. Tim Dunn and Satana Deberry filed earlier, as did Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop.

The following, through mid-afternoon, are other notable filings for Wednesday:

• U.S. House District 2: Green Party’s Michael Dublin and Republican Alan Swain.

• U.S. House District 5: Republican Ryan Mayberry.

• U.S. House District 10: Republican Charles Eller.

• U.S. House District 13: Republican Marcus Dellinger, bringing to 10 the number in the party primary.

• Governor: Democrat Gary Foxx and the Green Party’s Wayne Turner. Foxx’s entry makes five for the party primary, joining Chrelle Booker, Mike Morgan, Marcus Williams and state Attorney General Josh Stein. Morgan is a former state Supreme Court justice, and with Stein is considered the leading contender from the party.

• Lieutenant governor: Republican Peter Boykin, bringing the party primary entries to seven.

• North Carolina Senate: Sen. Dan Blue, D-Wake, has filed for reelection. He’s a longtime leader on Jones Street, having served in the state House from 1981 to 2003, and 2006 to 2009, including a stint as speaker from 1991 to 1995. He’s been in the Senate since 2009, where he is the Democratic leader.

North Carolinians will elect 14 members to the U.S. House of Representatives for two-year terms. The U.S. Senate seats are not on the ballot again until 2026 (Sen. Thom Tillis) and 2028 (Sen. Ted Budd).

The filing period closes at noon Friday.
