SNAP benefits in full expected Friday

(The Center Square) – Just in time for the weekend, recipients in the federal food stamps program in North Carolina will receive benefits on to their electronic benefits transfer cards Friday.

The Department of Health and Human Services late Thursday said approximately 600,000 households should have full amounts following Wednesday evening’s vote to reopen the federal government after 43 days of shutdown.

“As soon as we received authorization from the federal government, we immediately began working to get benefits out to the nearly 1.4 million people who depend on SNAP to keep food on the table,” said state Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai. “I am thankful that we will be able to make food benefits available on Friday, and to our team for their unwavering commitment to fight hunger.”

North Carolina was among the states on litigation complaints requesting federal contingency funds to be used for SNAP benefits while the government was shuttered.

Balances should be checked by recipients. Multiple ways are available: the ebtEDGE app, at ebtEDGE.com, or by calling the number on the back of the card (888-622-7328).

Faith organizations, local food banks, and a host of nonprofits have been working to feed those not getting benefits because of the shutdown. The Health Department did load partial payments onto electronic debit transfer cards on Nov. 7.

Approximately 600,000 households from Murphy to Manteo are impacted by disruptions to the SNAP payment system.
