(The Center Square) – Turning focus to her run for the North Carolina Supreme Court, state Republican Rep. Sarah Stevens on Tuesday tendered her resignation from the House of Representatives effective June 16.
Stevens, in her ninth term, is in a highly competitive bid to unseat incumbent Democratic Justice Anita Earls.
“I am deeply grateful,” she wrote in part, “for the trust placed in me by the people of Surry County, Alleghany County and Wilkes County and for the friendships and partnerships formed during my legislative service. I am especially proud of the work we accomplished together on the judicial reform, infrastructure improvements, education initiatives, foster care reform, and efforts to make state government more effective and accountable to the people we serve.”
Stevens’ District 90 today represents Surry and Wilkes counties in the northwestern region of the state along the Virginia border. Republicans there at the county level will forward a nominee to complete her term, a process ultimately ending with first-term Democratic Gov. Josh Stein in agreement.
In November, the election pits Republican Dan Kiger of State Road against Democrat Ken Badgett of Dobson.
