Skrmetti files TennCare fraud lawsuit against closed therapy clinic

(The Center Square) – Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said a now-closed therapy clinic filed more than $300,000 in fraudulent TennCare billings.

The attorney general is suing the owners of Mount Juliet’s Dynamic Therapy Center over claims filed between 2020 and 2023. Bills were sent to TennCare, Tennessee’s Medicaid program, for individual therapy, but the services delivered to patients were actually group therapy, Skrmetti said in a release. Individual therapy pays more than group therapy, he said.

“Fraudsters who abuse our trust to rip off TennCare are stealing from Tennessee taxpayers and will be held accountable,” said Skrmetti. “As always, our office is grateful to fight for Tennessee taxpayers and TennCare patients alongside our partners at the TBI.”

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the attorney general’s Civil Medicaid Fraud Division conducted a joint investigation after receiving a referral from TennCare’s Office of Program Integrity, according to the release.

“This case is another great example of how partnership among law enforcement agencies can work to hold accountable those abusing the TennCare system,” said Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David Rausch.

Skrmetti is asking the court for the recovery of more than $300,000 in payments deemed fraudulent and civil penalties of up to $14,308 to $28,619 per violation. The case was filed in Wilson County Circuit Court.
