Tennessee has had 16 boating deaths this year headed into Labor Day weekend

(The Center Square) – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will be on waterways in the state over the Labor Day weekend looking for dangerous boating, including boating under the influence and reckless operations.

The agency reminded boaters that children under 12 are required to wear a life jacket and there must be a life jacket on board for each person.

Tennessee has had 16 boating-related deaths this year compared to 20 at the same time in 2023. There were two deaths over the Fourth of July holiday and one on Memorial Day weekend.

“As you head out to one of our beautiful lakes or rivers this Labor Day weekend, please keep common sense and safety in mind,” TWRA Lt. Col Matt Majors said in a statement. “Our waterways are some of the best in the country, and it is our responsibility to keep them safe and enjoyable for everyone.”
