Arizona sends resources to battle California wildfires

(The Center Square) – Arizona resources has been sent out to assist as multiple wildfires burn through heavily populated areas of southern California.

The Eaton, Hurst, and Palisades fires are ongoing through different areas of Los Angeles County, and county officials emphasized on Wednesday morning that the area simply does not have enough firefighters to tackle all of them effectively at once.

“Two [Department of Forestry and Fire Management] crews were deployed to Southern California in advance of the fire,” Christian Slater, spokesman for Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, told The Center Square on Wednesday.

“We’re continuing to monitor the situation and coordinating with California to see if there is other support or additional needs,” he added.

Eight woodland fire engines will be sent from the department to help with the efforts on Wednesday, as the situation intensely escalated overnight.

The city of Phoenix will also be sending in assistance.

“[Phoenix Fire Department] has been called on to help fight the devastating blazes in Los Angeles,” Mayor Kate Gallego tweeted. “We’re still learning the details of what’s needed, and I expect our teams will be on the ground in LA in the next few days. I’m grateful our community can send help during this terrible tragedy.”

As Arizona neighbors the Golden State, there have been other impacts as a result of the fire so far. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport told The Center Square that three flights were diverted to Phoenix from the Los Angeles area on Tuesday night as the weather conditions posed a risk.
