(The Center Square) – Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs is in Mexico for the Arizona-Mexico Commission plenary this week.

According to a news release, members of her administration, including several agency directors for Water Resources, Public Safety, Tourism, Health Services, Real Estate, Agriculture and Youth, Faith and Family are in Hermosillo, Sonora, for the trip. The last plenary was in 2019 under former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey.

“Our economic and cultural partnership with Mexico, Arizona’s top trading partner, is crucial,” Hobbs said in a statement ahead of the event. “I am looking forward to the honor of visiting Hermosillo and meeting with Governor Alfonso Durazo at the upcoming plenary and to highlight the importance of our binational relations and the vital work our committees have done.”

Hobbs is meeting with Mexican leaders on economic development and border policy, among other issues.

The governor made sweeping changes to the commission when she first took office, as she booted the entire board from the Ducey administration. However, the board has a new slate led by Greater Phoenix Chamber President and CEO Todd Sanders at the helm, and Greater Phoenix Economic Council leader Chris Camacho as its vice president.

More details about the discussions are expected to be released later on Friday. This spring, the governor traveled to Mexico City with Arizona Commerce Authority President and CEO Sandra Watson focused specifically on trade between the state and the country, The Center Square reported. The federal government marks Mexico as the Grand Canyon State’s “largest market” for trade as of 2023, with $8 billion in exports from the state.
