(The Center Square) – Kari Lake elaborated on what she hopes her role would look like at Voice of America if she is officially placed as the international news organization’s director.
“It’s not my job to go in there and make it Trump TV, as I said. But it’s also not our job to go in there and unduly criticize President Trump. I just want to see fair coverage. I think that’s what he wants,” Lake told The Epoch Times in an interview last week.
“When he offered me the job, he didn’t say ‘Go in there and turn it into MAGA TV. He said ‘make sure they’re fair and accurate,’” she continued.
President-elect Donald Trump expressed his desire to have Lake lead the newsroom when he takes office, which is a process different from a typical Senate confirmation for some political appointments, according to Forbes.
“I am pleased to announce that Kari Lake will serve as our next Director of the Voice of America,” Trump said earlier in December.
“She will be appointed by, and work closely with, our next head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, who I will announce soon, to ensure that the American values of Freedom and Liberty are broadcast around the World FAIRLY and ACCURATELY, unlike the lies spread by the Fake News Media,” he added.
Lake is a close ally of the president-elect, who endorsed her unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate in 2024 and Arizona governor in 2022.
The Republican, a former local news anchor, waved off the possibility of seeking public office for a third time, the Arizona Republic reported. Some wondered if Lake would take a crack at running for governor for a second time, as it would set up a rematch with Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs if she won the primary.
Trump said he would support Karrin Taylor Robson, Lake’s 2022 gubernatorial primary rival, in the Arizona governor’s race in 2026. This statement from Trump during his address to a crowd at a Turning Point USA conference on Sunday in Phoenix triggered mixed reactions among the state’s Republicans, with some enthusiastic while others are hoping he’ll retract the support and back an alternative candidate.
