Louisiana state agencies submit budget requests for lawmakers

(The Center Square) − Louisiana state agencies have begun the process of submitting budget requests for fiscal year 2026.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is requesting $102.2 million, with 59% coming from federal funds and 17% from the state general fund. Most of the increase is tied to salary adjustments across its six agencies, particularly its veterans homes. Personnel costs remain the largest spending category.

The State Treasury is proposing a $14.2 million budget to support 74 positions across four programs. Nearly half of that total would go to its Administrative Program, which oversees unclaimed property.

The Public Service Commission plans to operate on a $10.9 million self-generated budget, with 85% of its spending dedicated to salaries and benefits. Its funding comes mainly from inspection and supervision fees on utilities and motor carriers.

The Department of Transportation and Development is proposing a $778.6 million budget, with nearly 80% from dedicated funds like the Transportation Trust Fund. The largest program, Operations, handles road maintenance and supports a significant share of the agency’s 4,319 positions.
