LA immigration arrests lead to protests, clashes

(The Center Square) – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Los Angeles on Friday led to protests and dozens of arrests as the Trump administration continues its efforts to locate and deport foreign nationals in the U.S. illegally.

ICE agents, with assistance from officers of the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, carried out operations at seven businesses in the downtown area, including two Home Depots.

As news of the activity spread on social media, hundreds of protesters gathered at the Edward R Roybal Federal Building, where those who were taken into custody were being detained.

Some protesters clashed with federal officers, and attempted to block access to the building. Witness video posted to social media showed protesters yelling at federal agents, and some throwing objects at them.

Los Angeles police, who did not participate in the immigration enforcement actions, ordered protesters to disperse, calling the protests an unlawful assembly.

“Today the LAPD became aware that federal law enforcement agencies conducted activities in the City of Los Angeles,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell posted on social media. “I’m aware that these actions cause anxiety for many Angelenos, so I want to make it clear: the LAPD is not involved in civil immigration enforcement. While the LAPD will continue to have a visible presence in all our communities to ensure public safety, we will not assist or participate in any sort of mass deportations, nor will the LAPD try to determine an individual’s immigration status.”

At least 44 people were arrested, according to media reports.
