OKLAHOMA CITY — Millwood Public Schools has completed one of the largest public school solar installations in the State of Oklahoma, marking a significant investment in long-term financial stability, energy resilience, and educational innovation.
The 276 kW solar system, installed at Millwood High School, includes 531 high-efficiency panels and is projected to offset approximately 44% of the building’s annual electricity use.
By significantly reducing utility expenses at one of the district’s highest energy-consuming facilities, the project helps transform a major operating cost into a long-term strategic asset.
Millwood High School historically accounted for nearly half of the district’s total campus energy consumption. School leadership identified solar as an opportunity to stabilize operating costs, hedge against rising utility rates, and reinvest savings directly into student programs and facilities.
“Millwood has always been focused on preparing students for the future, and this project reflects that commitment in a tangible way,” said Dr. Robinson-Woods, Superintendent of Millwood Public Schools. “By investing in long-term energy infrastructure, we are strengthening our financial foundation while creating new opportunities for our students to learn, explore, and grow.”
The project was delivered through Brightwell’s structured impact investment model, requiring no upfront capital from the district. Brightwell, an Oklahoma-founded firm serving schools and nonprofit organizations nationwide, helps mission-driven institutions implement energy infrastructure that generates long-term savings without placing strain on operating budgets. This approach enables Millwood to stabilize energy costs, protect against future rate increases, and redirect meaningful savings back into its core educational mission.
Beyond its operational benefits, the solar installation will also serve as a hands-on educational resource. Real-time energy production data will be integrated into the school environment, creating new opportunities for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs to engage directly with renewable energy systems and infrastructure.
“This project represents more than energy savings,” Robinson-Woods added. “It creates real-world learning opportunities for our students while strengthening the long-term sustainability of our district.”
As one of the largest public school solar projects in Oklahoma, the installation positions Millwood as a leading example of how school districts can use innovative infrastructure to improve financial resilience, support student learning, and plan responsibly for the future.
