Illinois quick hits: Casten town hall shut down; measure eliminates move-in fees

Casten town hall shut down

A northern Illinois town hall hosted by Congressman Sean Casten had to be shut down by police.

The Democratic legislator from Downers Grove was interrupted several times by pro-Palestinian protestors. In one instance, a woman in the audience stood up and yelled at Casten about U.S. support for Israel. In another instance, a man jumped onto the stage, forcing police to escort those in attendance out of the building.

Measure eliminates move-in fees

A new measure in the Illinois General Assembly would remove move-in fees from renters. Currently, landlords are allowed to charge a move-in fee in addition to a security deposit.

State Rep. Nabeela Syed said many of the junk fees imposed on renters are unnecessary. The bill passed out of the Housing Committee and now heads to the House floor.

Farm bureaus honored

Illinois Farm Bureau Young Leaders and Collegiate Farm Bureaus were recognized for tallying the most volunteer hours nationwide during Farm Bureau’s annual “Harvest for All” program.

The young farmers accumulated nearly 21,000 hours by volunteering at local food banks across the state throughout the year. The group raised more than $159,000 for hunger relief efforts and donated a total of 312,568 lbs. of food.
