Illinois quick hits: Lawsuit over fatal veterans COVID outbreak proceeds; more Chicago robberies

Lawsuit over fatal COVID outbreak proceeds

Legal proceedings will move forward in LaSalle County in connection with the deaths of dozens of veterans who died at a retirement home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Between November 2020 and January 2021, 36 veterans died during an outbreak at the LaSalle Veterans Home. An investigation by an inspector general found that health and safety protocols were ignored.

The firm representing 31 of the 32 families who are taking legal action did not disclose the amount of damages they are requesting.

Northwestern University staff and students set up an encampment on the Evanston campus Thursday morning to show support for Palestine.

Over a hundred protestors said the encampment will remain until the school meets their demands, including protecting student civil liberties and safety. Northwestern University issued a statement saying the encampment was illegal per school policy.

More Chicago robberies

Chicago police are investigating a string of armed robberies early Thursday, with robbers dragging a 66-year-old woman onto the street in one incident.

Police said the three victims were walking on the sidewalk when two armed male suspects approached them. The suspects robbed the victims and fled in a brown sedan driven by another suspect.
