(The Center Square) – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer joined the world’s leaders at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland this week.
Her office labeled it an “investment mission.”
“Michigan is open for business, and we’re continuing to compete and win on the global stage,” Whitmer said. “I’m excited to tell Michigan’s story this week and build relationships directly with global leaders at the World Economic Forum.”
The World Economic Forum is an international, nonprofit event that brings together business leaders, government officials and experts each year to discuss major global economic, political and social issues.
Whitmer also attended the forum in 2023. At that event, Whitmer spoke about state efforts in clean energy and sustainability projects.
This year, her schedule is similar. Tuesday, she spoke at a panel discussion on the future of electric vehicles, titled “Can EVs Really Dominate?”
“Coming from the state of Michigan, you know, we produce over 20% of the autos in the U.S., and we’re very proud of that,” Whitmer said during that panel. “I think it’s exciting to see that transition continue to happen, although I, for one, would like to see us continue to move as fast as we can.”
That said, Whitmer said she recognizes the importance of choice for consumers.
“Right now, in the states, it’s important that we’ve got a diversity of choices for consumers,” she said. “So, we’re very focused on making sure we have the skills to support that, that the companies can be competitive while they pursue both, and that’s been a central focus of our work at the state level.”
Today, she will appear on another panel of other U.S. governors and speak at a press conference on “closing the talent gap” for teachers. Whitmer has promised her appearance in Davos will ensure Michigan’s place on the world stage.
“We’re creating opportunity and helping workers get the skills they need for good-paying jobs. We’re building vibrant communities with bustling main streets and downtowns. I’ll keep working with anyone to grow our economy, strengthen our defense and manufacturing industries, and help more families ‘make it’ in Michigan.”
Republicans are calling Whitmer out for attending the event.
“It is the height of arrogance for Gov. Whitmer to jet off to an exclusive Swiss resort to lecture the world on a ‘talent gap’ that her own policies helped create here in Michigan,” said Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township. “While she is enjoying fireside fondue with foreign billionaires and union bosses today, families back home are struggling to make it in Michigan, and our children are trapped in a failing education system.”
President Donald Trump also spoke at the event today.
