A New Era: Pearland Flips Longtime GOP Stronghold

(AURN News) — Quentin Wiltz has become the first Black mayor in Pearland, Texas, history following a landmark victory in a city long considered a reliable Republican stronghold.

Wiltz, a prominent Democrat, narrowly defeated Tony Carbone, a Republican backed by key GOP state leaders.

The win marks a major ideological shift for Pearland. For nearly 50 years, the mayor’s office has been held by Republican-aligned leadership, including a 42-year tenure by former Mayor Tom Reid.

Wiltz’s victory with 51% of the vote signals a new era for one of Texas’ fastest-growing suburbs, underscoring how even established GOP strongholds are seeing changes in the political tide.
