Rain falls, drought conditions rise

(The Center Square) – Rain fell across North Carolina in the past week. Drought conditions, not so much.

Exceptional and extreme drought rose from 54.87% of the state to 60.76% in Thursday’s weekly release from the U.S. Drought Monitor. An area just east of Charlotte touching four counties is the 1.04% of the state that is deemed in exceptional drought.

All the state remains at a minimum in moderate drought.

Sixty wildfires this month have burned more than 37 acres, the state Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services says. The calendar year totals are 4,280 fires and more than 10,000 acres.

The state-mandated burn ban remains in effect for 19 counties: Alamance, Anson, Cabarrus, Chatham, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Gaston, Guilford, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Stanly, Stokes and Union.
