(AURN News) — The housing market continues to show signs of strain as new data indicate that sales remain sluggish.

The National Association of Realtors reported an 8.4% month-over-month decrease in existing-home sales in January. After seasonal adjustment, that equals an annual rate of 3.91 million homes sold. Compared with January 2025, existing-home sales declined 4.4%.

Home prices remain elevated. The average home sale price rose to $396,800.

Sales of single-family homes fell 9% in January compared with December. The median home price increased 0.6% from January 2025 to $400,300.

Regionally, the West saw the sharpest month-over-month decline, with sales down 10.3%.
