(AURN News) — A federal judge put the brakes on the Trump administration’s plan to lay off thousands of federal employees amid the government shutdown. Judge Susan Y. Illston, a U.S. district judge for the Northern District of California, ruled the layoffs illegal and beyond the administration’s authority, blocking most agencies from moving forward.
About 4,000 federal workers had already received termination notices before the court intervened — part of a broader plan that Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought said could eventually reach more than 10,000 job cuts.
Illston called the move unprecedented and said the White House appeared to be using the shutdown as political punishment rather than fiscal management.
The restraining order halts all reduction in force (RIF) actions until a hearing later this month. The administration is expected to appeal the ruling.
For now, the judge’s order restores some balance but also raises questions about how far the administration is willing to go in pursuing its political goals.
