Kamala Harris Rules Out 2026 California Governor’s Race

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has announced she will not run for California governor in 2026, according to The New York Times.

After months of speculation, Harris said her public service “will not be in elected office — for now.” Though she returned to Los Angeles in January and quietly explored a bid, she skipped major political events and showed little interest in mounting a campaign.

Her decision follows her 2024 loss to President Donald Trump and leaves open the possibility of a 2028 presidential run. Harris said she plans to support Democratic candidates nationwide and will share more about her next steps soon.

Her choice clears the way for other contenders, including term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom, to shape California’s political future.
