Nancy Pelosi to Retire After 40 Years in Congress

(AURN News) — Nancy Pelosi, the first and only woman to serve as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, announced she will not seek reelection after nearly 40 years in Congress.

In a video message, the 85-year-old Democrat called her time representing San Francisco “the greatest honor of my life.”

Elected in 1987, Pelosi became speaker in 2007 and again in 2019, steering Democrats through historic legislation including the Affordable Care Act and COVID-19 recovery packages.

Known for her sharp negotiating skills and command of the House floor, Pelosi led her party through two impeachments of Donald Trump and decades of shifting political tides.

Her announcement marks the end of an era for one of the most powerful and trailblazing figures in U.S. politics.

Pelosi says she will spend the rest of her term focused on protecting democracy and preparing the next generation of leaders.

Her decision closes a defining chapter in Democratic history.
