Nation’s mood strongly favored the Republicans ahead of 2024 election

As America awaits President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, a global analytics and advisory firm says throughout 2024 key indicators showed the election environment was favorable to Republicans.

The key indicators suggest that Trump’s victory wasn’t a one-off anomaly; rather, it was the culmination of years of growing discontent which foreshadowed the change in the election.

The Republican Party has made historical gains across the nation, gaining the White House, the Senate, and most likely the House.

In the report, Gallup says key U.S. political and economic indicators show “Americans’ relatively high Republican Party identification and leaning heading into Election Day, combined with their negative views of the economy, the direction of the country and the job performance of Democratic President Joe Biden, created a favorable environment for Trump and the Republican Party.”

Out of 22 issues that voters said influenced their choice for the future president, the economy was one of the highest-ranking, with 52% of voters saying the candidate’s position was “extremely important” as public confidence in the economy has remained negative with the rise of inflation.

Economic confidence was rated at -26, compared to the -4 recorded in 2020 and the -1 in 2016, according to Gallup.

Ahead of the election, Gallup found that the Republican Party had a lead in party affiliation, where 48% of voters were Republican or Republican-leaning, whereas 45% identified as Democrats.

Democrats had led Republicans in party affiliations from 1992 until 2020.

Twenty-six percent of Americans were reportedly satisfied with the way things were going in the U.S. ahead of the election. While notably, 48% of voters said that Republicans were better suited to handle what Americans named the most important problems.

The problems were the economy (21%), immigration (21%), the government (17%) and inflation (14%).

The handling of these issues seems to have unified the country, as more than 90% of counties in the U.S. shifted in favor of Trump compared to the 2020 election presidential vote margin.

The 2024 insights ahead of this year’s election also showed voters were less worried about Trump’s character.

Where Harris led in voters’ opinions of strong moral character, honesty, and being trustworthy, Trump led in opinion of being a strong decisive leader and getting things done.

According to Gallup, voters will reward the favoring party when happy with the state of the nation and punish it when dissatisfied. The report stated that America’s continued unhappiness with the current state of the nation was seemingly responsible for the defeat of the democratic party.

Prior issues lingering from COVID-19 and race relations that shrouded the previous election have now switched to voter frustration over the economy and immigration, leaving “Americans no happier with the state of the nation after four years of a generally unpopular Democratic administration than after four years of an unpopular Republican one.”

As previously reported by The Center Square, the election cycle featured unusual alliances and demographic shifts not seen in recent elections. Trump, who is known to voice his opinions no matter the issue took to social media throughout the election year which enabled him to bypass the traditional media, and speak directly to targeted voters.
