Oklahoma Governor Targets DEI Initiatives

More states are targeting DEI funding, the latest being Oklahoma. Gov. Kevin Stitt signed an executive order eliminating funding for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the state.

The order specifically prohibits state agencies from supporting DEI roles or programs that offer preferential treatment based on race. The governor argued the focus should be on education rather than politics or indoctrination, especially in colleges and universities. He emphasized redirecting resources and questioned the allocation of substantial salaries to DEI staff.

The decision, of course, has sparked debate. While Gov. Stitt believes it’s a shift towards more objective education, critics like Sen. George Young view it as a step away from embracing diversity in learning environments.

Sen. Young, recalling the civil rights struggle of the 60s, highlighted the ongoing relevance of DEI and fostering inclusive opportunities.

State agencies and universities are now required to report their DEI funding by May 2024, raising questions about the long-term impact on the education system.
