This Christmas May Not Be White But It Will Be Bright

If you are hoping for a white Christmas, you may just have to settle for a warm one. A rare holiday heat wave is sweeping across much of the country, pushing temperatures far beyond what late December usually brings.

Forecasters say some regions will feel conditions more like early fall or even spring, with readings soaring as much as 30 to 35 degrees above normal. From the Southwest through the Central Plains, record-breaking warmth is expected on Christmas Day. In Kansas City, Christmas afternoon could reach the low 70s.

Portions of the East Coast are also getting a holiday boost. In parts of Virginia, Christmas Day temperatures could land in the mid-60s, with near 70-degree readings possible before the week wraps up. Meteorologists point to a strong weather pattern pulling warm, humid air northward while cooler air remains bottled up in Canada. So this year, instead of roasting, you might find yourself grilling outdoors.
