Cornell, Trump Admin Reach $60M Title VI Deal

(AURN News) — Today, Cornell University reached a $60 million settlement with the Trump administration to restore more than $250 million in federal research funds that had been frozen amid civil rights investigations.

The six-page agreement ends all pending probes by the Justice Department, Education Department, and Health and Human Services, while binding Cornell to the administration’s interpretation of Title VI and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act.

Cornell denies any wrongdoing, but under the deal, it must submit quarterly certifications signed by its president under penalty of perjury, affirming full compliance.

The university will also provide anonymized admissions data — broken down by race, GPA, and test scores — to show that race is no longer a factor.

After the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action, the federal government agreed to restore all terminated grants and reopen Cornell’s access to new awards. Many critics say the move amounts to government overreach and control.
