Democratic senator tenders resignation from General Assembly

(The Center Square) – Sen. Graig Meyer, a Democrat from Orange County, is resigning from the North Carolina General Assembly.

Representing his home county plus Person and Caswell, he’ll serve through the end of the month. His next post is executive director of the North Carolina Justice Center, an adversarial opponent of a number of laws pushed by Republicans including the Opportunity Scholarship program.

“We can and must do better,” Meyer said in his announcement. “For me that means leaving elected office and stepping into a new role.

“There is no organization more important than the North Carolina Justice Center in our collective efforts to restore North Carolina to our place as the Beacon of the South.”

Meyer served four-plus terms in the House of Representatives. He’s in his second in the upper chamber.

Since the historic 2010 midterms, Republicans have held majorities in both chambers. Taxes have been lowered and regulations trimmed. The state now has universal school choice for K-12 students and their families.

In a statement, the minority leader of the chamber offered praise and continued support.

Sen. Sydney Batch, D-Wake, said in part, “While we will miss his partnership and presence in the Senate, we know he will continue advocating for the people of North Carolina in his new role.”
