Early voting begins; less than 2,500 to 3 million for unaffiliated bloc

(The Center Square) – Ballots requested by registered voters in North Carolina begin going out Monday, two days after confirmation the unaffiliated bloc climbed within 2,491 of 3 million.

The ninth largest state in the nation is just shy of 7.7 million voters, with the recent trend ending 2025 being 7 in 10 choosing independence from Republicans and Democrats. The rolls swelled by 33,205 in the seven days ending Saturday, with unaffiliated voters taking 63.1% (20,951) of those, Republicans 22.4% (7,426) and Democrats 14.2% (4,701).

North Carolina’s 7,688,796 registrations are led by those unaffiliated (38.98%). Republicans have 30.2% and Democrats 30.1%.

Democrats in March 2022 were surpassed by the number choosing no party; Republicans were surpassed in September 2017.

Total voter registrations eclipsed 7.8 million on Election Day 2024; routine maintenance throughout the year is a key contributing factor to the volume changes.
