Former New Concord official charged with stealing $450,000

(The Center Square) – An Ohio grand jury returned an indictment for theft against a former small-town fiscal officer accused of stealing more than $450,000.

Lynn Marlatt, a former fiscal officer in New Concord, is accused of theft of nearly half a million dollars. She also faces charges of telecommunications fraud and tampering with records in Muskingum County Common Pleas Court.

Marlatt was fired in 2023.

State Auditor Keith Faber’s Special Investigations Unit began an investigation in Marlatt after a local bank reached out to village officials about what they termed as suspicious activity in a dormant village account.

Faber said his office identified multiple check, debit card and other unauthorized withdrawals by Marlatt. Prosecutors said she used that money to pay off debt and other personal expenses.

She is also accused of having altered vendor invoices and village checks to try to hide what she was doing.

Marlatt is expected to make her first court appearance Wednesday.
