Former University of Michigan football coach remains in jail after firing

(The Center Square) –The second-highest paid public employee in the state of Michigan, former University Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore, was fired for cause and then later arrested on suspicion of assault as the school now begins a search for a new head football coach.

Moore remains in Washtenaw County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.

Moore was scheduled to make $6.1 million in 2025, behind only Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo ($6.2 million annually) in pay in the state and ahead of the $5.1 million that Michigan men’s basketball coach Dusty May makes and the $4 million that Michigan State head football coach Pat Fitzgerald will make in his first year.

“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” the school’s athletic director, Warde Manuel, announced. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”

Moore was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday and remained there Thursday with no charges, court dates or scheduled release.

“A suspect in this case was taken into custody,” Pittsfield Township Police said in a statement. “This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community.”
