Health insurer joins pledges to end world hunger by 2030

(The Center Square) – BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina is among 141 pledges toward ending hunger, building healthy communities and reducing diseases related to diet by 2030.

Nutrition coaching and a program for healthy food delivery as a standard benefit for members are the health insurance company’s contribution. BlueCross BlueShield was included in a Tuesday morning announcement led by Doug Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris.

BlueCross BlueShield has been administrator of the state’s health insurance plan covering about 740,000 teachers, state employees and retirees, and their dependents. In 2025, Aetna takes over.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service said in 2022, the latest year for full figures available, there were about 17 million households in the U.S. with not enough money or other resources for sufficient food. That’s about 12.8%.

Commitments announced Tuesday have a value of $1.7 billion. Included in the endeavor, including past pledges valued at $8 billion, are such recognizable names as the NFL and other major sports leagues, the Harlem Globetrotters, WNBA player Elena Della Donne, and Spanish-American chef and restaurateur José Andrés.
