Protesters Clash With Federal Officers in DC’s U Street Corridor

Protesters confronted law enforcement officers, including Homeland Security agents, at a police checkpoint in D.C.’s U Street corridor Wednesday night, chanting “Go home fascists” and urging drivers to turn away, The New York Times reports.

The demonstration came amid President Donald Trump’s expanding federal control over the capital’s policing, with 800 National Guard troops, 500 federal agents and local police under his command. While violent crime has hit a 30-year low, Trump has vowed the city will be “essentially crime-free.”

Mayor Muriel Bowser has shifted between criticism and cautious support, later calling the move an “authoritarian push.”

Since Monday, at least 66 arrests have been made, though city arrest rates remain consistent with last year.
