Redistricting Pushes Out Al Green; Paxton Wins GOP Nomination

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, who has represented Houston in Congress since 2005, lost his seat Tuesday night to fellow Democratic Rep. Christian Menefee, D-Texas, in a runoff reshaped by Republican-led redistricting.

Republicans redrew Green’s district to favor GOP candidates, forcing two Black Democrats into the same congressional race.

On the Republican side, Trump-backed Attorney General Ken Paxton defeated four-term Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, with 64% of the vote, making Cornyn the first Texas Republican senator to lose his party’s nomination for reelection.

Paxton has faced years of legal and political controversy, including unresolved felony securities fraud charges, impeachment by the Texas House on allegations of bribery and abuse of office, and whistleblower accusations from former aides that led to a $6.6 million settlement approved by Texas lawmakers. He also sought to overturn the 2020 election.

Paxton now faces Democratic Texas state Rep. James Talarico in November.
