Rep. Cori Bush Loses Primary to Wesley Bell in Closely Watched Race

Representative Cori Bush of Missouri, one of the most outspoken progressives in the House, lost her primary on Tuesday to Wesley Bell, a county prosecutor who ran as a progressive and pragmatist, according to the Associated Press. Bell’s campaign was significantly boosted by over $8 million in spending from a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and other pro-Israel groups, transforming the race into one of the most expensive House primaries in history.

The contentious contest came just weeks after Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York, another vocal progressive critic of Israel, suffered a primary defeat, also due to heavy spending by the same pro-Israel groups.

Bush, a former nurse elected in 2020 during a wave of progressive victories, had made a name for herself in 2014 as a leading Black activist in Ferguson following the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
