This Day in History: Whitney Houston’s Album ‘Whitney’ Debuts at No. 1 in 1987

On June 27, 1987, Whitney Houston made music history with the release of her album “Whitney.” She became the first female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart and the first artist to achieve this feat in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

The album’s lead single, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me),” became a global sensation, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Remarkably, Houston was the first female artist to have four number-one singles from a single album. “Whitney” went on to sell 20 million copies worldwide.

Born in 1963 in Newark, New Jersey, Whitney Houston was a multifaceted talent: a singer, actress, and model. In 2009, she was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the most-awarded female artist of all time.

She passed away in 2012 at the age of 48.
