Threats Target HBCUs, Forcing Several Campuses Into Lockdown

Fear rippled through Black college campuses today. At least six HBCUs — Alabama State University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, Clark Atlanta University, Southern University in Baton Rouge, and Bethune-Cookman University — were forced to lock down after receiving threats.

At Alabama State, officials called them “terroristic threats.” Hampton shut down through Friday, while Georgia’s Spelman College told students to shelter in place as a precaution after Clark Atlanta was targeted. In Louisiana, Southern University’s entire Baton Rouge campus shut down — from the law school to the research center — with everyone ordered inside.

So far, police say there are no injuries. Students at HBCUs — already underfunded and overlooked — are now facing threats that disrupt their education. Law enforcement is investigating, and the incident underscores how fragile campus safety is in this moment.
