Two candidates vie for GOP nomination for 2nd Congressional District seat

(The Center Square) — On Tuesday, GOP primary voters will decide who’ll be the party’s nominee for the 2nd Congressional District race.

Former Alabama Forestry Commission member Caroleene Dobson will take on former state Sen. Dick Brewbacker.

The winner of the GOP primary will take on the victor in Tuesday’s other runoff between former Justice Department official Shomari Figures and Rep. Anthony Daniels of Huntsville. Figures, the son of a state senator, earned more than 43% of the vote March 5.

The race could be close, as 57,129 voters cast ballots in the Democratic primary and 56,970 GOP voters did so in the 49% majority Black District, a difference of only 159 votes.

The GOP primary had a similar vote breakdown as the Democratic one, as Brewbaker picked up 41.7% of the vote versus 27.3% for Dobson.

Brewbaker, a Montgomery auto dealer who declined to run for his state Senate seat in 2018, has stressed a positive tone in his campaign.

“People all over are taking notice of our positive, principled campaign,” Brewbaker said in a post on his campaign Facebook page. “Liberty, Security and Limited Government is the foundation of what I believe in — I much prefer to talk about my principles than to attack another Republican.

“I stand on my record, and I’m asking for your vote this Tuesday based on my record, and not on trying to tear down my opponent.”

Dobson has signed a pledge to term-limit herself and will cosponsor and vote for a bill to limit terms for members of Congress. She also has signed a pledge not to vote for tax increases.

The 2nd District was redrawn after several attempts by the Legislature after a federal court decision issued an order requiring the creation of a new majority Black congressional district.

In the 1st District primary, U.S. Rep. Barry Moore knocked off U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl, a Mobile Republican, after Moore’s Wiregrass counties were drawn into the 1st District.
