(The Center Square) – The Aurora Public Schools Board of Education in Colorado is participating in a retreat focused on diversity, equity and inclusion and the material for the meeting highlights one of the biggest proponents of critical race theory.

The April 27 meeting’s material highlights the work of Kimberle Crenshaw, a full-time faculty member at Columbia Law School. Columbia Law School faculty are in the news recently after they criticized administration at Columbia University for arresting 100 pro-Palestine protesters.

Crenshaw’s bio on the Columbia Law School page states: “Crenshaw’s work has been foundational in critical race theory and in ‘intersectionality,’ a term she coined to describe the double bind of simultaneous racial and gender prejudice.”

The DEI session material for the school board states: “We’ll explore the concept of intersectionality and its relevance to robust, inclusive equity work. … We will prioritize intersectionality in our equity decision making framework to help us ensure we’re moving in service of every APS student and family!”

In a 2019 article, the Vox wrote a story on intersectionality, saying, “… it’s not just academic panels where the fight over what intersectionality is — or isn’t — plays out. Intersectionality has become a dividing line between the left and the right. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) tweets that ‘the future is female [and] intersectional.’ The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro, meanwhile, posts videos with headlines like, ‘Is intersectionality the biggest problem in America?’”

APS has embraced DEI, saying it is an essential part of every decision the school makes and stating the district will not implement any program that doesn’t prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Center Square previously reported the district’s DEI staff said that they didn’t feel school leadership fully embraced DEI and that there was a “lack of trust.”

“Intersectionality is a uniting framework…Black people are not just straight. They’re not just men. They’re not just middle class. When we expand our understanding of Black reality…it means we have connections with other movements and other people,” Crenshaw said on X, formally known as Twitter.

APS did not respond to an email seeking comment.
