Wyoming SOS opposes Postal Service plan to move Casper’s mail processing to Billings

(The Center Square) – Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray wants the U.S. Postal Service to withdraw a proposal to move mail processing from Casper’s distribution center to Montana.

The USPS would move processing operations from Casper to Billings is part of a broader plan to help save money, improve service, and retain employees. Gray also opposes the service’s plan to move Cheyenne’s mail processing to Denver, Colorado, as The Center Square previously reported.

Gray fears the moves will have a negative impact on Wyoming’s residents, especially during elections.

“My office has been contacted by numerous Wyomingites, concerned that processing Wyoming election mail outside the state of Wyoming would delay delivery of mail-in ballots and otherwise impede the integrity of the upcoming 2024 election,” Gray said in a letter dated March 7 to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. “I share these same concerns, and I view these repeated and disturbing proposals to move mail processing outside the State of Wyoming as detrimental to Wyoming elections and the people of Wyoming.”

“I request the Postal Service withdraw its proposal as written, and ensure that Wyoming election mail is processed within the confines of Wyoming,” Gray added. “Given the gravity of these concerns, I also would like to meet with you regarding these concerns.”

Gray previously sent a letter to DeJoy in December 2023 expressing concern over the Cheyenne-to-Denver plan.
