Georgia’s special tax refunds on their way, Kemp says

(The Center Square) – The Georgia Department of Revenue has started sending out $1 billion in special tax refunds approved by lawmakers earlier this year, Gov. Brian Kemp said Monday.

The money comes from the state surplus. This is the fourth consecutive year that Kemp has asked the General Assembly to pass legislation enabling the refunds.

Taxpayers who filed state returns in 2024 and 2025 and do not owe state taxes are eligible. Married couples that file jointly will receive $500, a head of household will receive $375 and single filers will receive $250.

“Georgians know best how to spend their money, not the government,” Kemp said. “That’s why we’re committed to being good stewards of those dollars and putting more of them where they belong – in Georgians’ pockets – at a time when other states are having to raise taxes.”

The Revenue Department created a webpage where taxpayers can check their eligibility and see the status of their refund. The department is updating the page nightly, according to the website.

“Our team is ready to deliver these refunds efficiently and securely to Georgia taxpayers,” said Revenue Commissioner David Burge in a statement. “We’ve built a process that prioritizes accuracy and speed so eligible filers can receive their money as quickly as possible.”
