South Carolina campus 3rd in a week cleared of possible gunman

(The Center Square) – Students resumed routines shaken but unhurt Sunday evening at the University of South Carolina campus in Columbia where a shooter was reported.

The shelter in place instruction lasted 95 minutes and lawmen from multiple agencies swept through the area to check. A description was given on the Carolina Alert social media system used by the university of more than 46,000 undergraduates.

The campus is the third in less than a week to lock down because of reports of a shooter. It happened last week at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and at Villanova University in Philadelphia.

The first alert went through at 6:36 p.m. and the clearance came at 8:11 p.m. In between, the Thomas Cooper Library was named as a possible scene. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded.

The university said some students were treated for minor injuries that happened in evacuating to safe places.

A university spokesman said the alert “was sent out of abundance of caution.”

Classes started Tuesday.
