Eaton Fire death roll rises to 18 after human remains found

(The Center Square) – Deaths from the Eaton Fire rose to 18 after investigators determined remains found in Altadena were human.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Department responded Wednesday to the 900 block of Boston Street in Altadena, an unincorporated community outside Pasadena that was devastated by the Eaton Fire in January. A six-member team investigated remains found there and confirmed they were human, the department said in a news release.

The Eaton Fire burned 14,021 acres, destroyed 9,414 structures and damaged another 1,074 structures, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The death toll for the Palisades Fire in the Los Angeles area remains 12, the Medical Examiner’s Department said.

The blaze burned 23,448 acres, destroyed 6,837 structures and damaged 973 structures, according to Cal Fire.

The Palisades and Eaton fires started Jan. 7 and didn’t become 100% contained until Jan. 31.
