Supreme Court Allows Trump to Proceed with Education Department Firings

The Supreme Court has cleared the way for the Trump administration to proceed with mass firings at the Education Department, effectively allowing the dismantling of a Cabinet-level agency created by Congress, according to The New York Times.

The unsigned order permits the firing of more than 1,300 employees — about half the department’s staff — despite a previous court ruling that blocked the cuts. Legal experts warn the move expands presidential power and undermines Congress’ authority.

In a dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote that Trump is gutting a department critical to civil rights enforcement, student loans and special education. While the ruling is technically temporary, it has already allowed terminations to resume.

Union leaders called it a direct threat to millions of students.
