Illinois Secretary of State’s Office reveals rejected vanity license plates

(The Center Square) – The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office is asking Illinois motorists to keep it clean when requesting vanity license plates.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has revealed its vanity license plate so-called “naughty list,” the submissions that were rejected this year due to profanity or offensive language.

“In 2023, more than 54,000 applications for vanity and personalized plates were submitted,” said Giannoulias. “Of these, 304 plate names were added to the permanent naughty list.”

According to the secretary of state’s office, some of the rejected plate requests this year include terms like MILFS, POOPSY, and IOWASUX.

In some cases, letter combinations like XKXKKXK or QOQOQO were denied because they are difficult to read and could pose problems for law enforcement.

A total of over 7,600 license plates have been rejected by the state.

Illinois motorists pay an extra $94 for a new vanity plate, which contains all letters. A new “personalized” license plate, which is a combination of letters and numbers, costs an extra $47 a year.

“I appreciate the creativity and pride Illinoisans take in choosing their own customized license plates, but they must meet the standards of good taste and decency,” Giannoulias said.

The Secretary of State’s Office said currently, there are 811,351 vehicles registered in Illinois with vanity or personalized license plates to Illinoisans.
