Shreveport capital project database shows 163 total projects

(The Center Square) — A newly constructed database on the Shreveport website details 163 total projects in progress in the city.

The database, previously discussed in the Shreveport City Council meeting, provides the public with transparency and updated information about which project proposals are active in the city.

The new police headquarters, city jail maintenance, fire and police academy, police substations and a new emergency mobile command center are among the many projects detailed for residents to see.

The 2021 General Obligation Bond funded the Shreveport Police Department’s emergency mobile command vehicle for a total of $1 million. The 2021 General Obligation Bond has been used to fund many public safety projects including the police substation on Interstate Drive and another on North Market.

Additional lighting is being installed on Interstate 220 and North Market, according to the database. Lighting has been discussed rigorously during city council meetings as a means to decrease crime in specific areas. The 2021 General Obligation Bond is also being used for this project, with a total allocation amount of $5 million. The entire project is expected to be completed by December of next year.

Many fire stations throughout Shreveport are getting renovations as well. Fire Station No.19, No.5, No.6 and No.7 are being renovated to fix structural, mechanical and operational deficiencies. According to the project description, one component is full-service generators for each of these locations to provide power during natural disasters or emergencies.

The renovations for these four fire stations are being funded by the 2024 General Obligation Bond for $750,000 and are in the planning stage while they decide which station will receive renovations first.

Apart from fire station renovations, a full replacement of Fire Station No. 3 is in the works since the station is reportedly outdated with limited space. There is available land where a new state-of-the-art station will be built to meet all requirements.

Similar to the four stations being renovated, Fire Station No. 3 is funded by the 2024 General Obligation Bond, with an estimated cost of $1 million. Since the project is currently in the design stage, no start or end date is given.

Apart from police and fire projects, various park projects are detailed, including a $1.2 million roof replacement for the Shreveport Aquarium, tennis court and playground updates for A.C. Steere Park and a splash pad at Bilberry Park.
