Tennessee Legislature closed for week due to cold weather, dangerous roads

(The Center Square) – The Tennessee Legislature called off this week’s committee meetings and legislative schedule due to cold temperatures and the risk of snow and icy conditions on the state’s roads.

“Due to the extreme weather, dangerous temperatures and resulting treacherous road conditions, we have decided to close the Cordell Hull Building and cancel all official legislative meetings for the rest of the week,” a joint statement from House Speaker Cameron Sexton and Lieutenant Gov. Randy McNally said.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation warned motorists to stay home and not drive Monday as Community Relations Officer Rae Anne Bradley said the department helped clear more than 150 vehicles on the roadway in just the Upper Cumberland and Chattanooga areas on Monday.

“Road conditions will remain hazardous for AT LEAST the next 24 hours,” Bradley wrote Monday night.

A wind-chill advisory from the National Weather Service is in effect in Nashville until 10 a.m. on Wednesday with wind chills as low as 15-below zero leading to slippery road conditions.

Metro Nashville and Williamson County schools announced they would be closed Tuesday and Wednesday as many school districts across the state closed due to the winter weather.
